Nederlands: Stereonegatief. "Ziehier een nijverheid die bij uitstek geschikt is voor inlandschen arbeid voor vrouwen en mannen, en dan ook inderdaad geheel in inlandsche handen berust." Aldus G.P. Rouffaer in 1904 over vlechtwerk op Java. Het vlechten van hoeden van bamboe in en rond Batavia is een mooi voorbeeld van dit vlechtwerk. Het is er tevens een met een lange traditie. Het 'daghregister' (een soort dagboek van de VOC te Batavia) over 1678 meldt al de export van 'Bataviase hoeden'. Rond 1880 worden de 'Tangerangse hoeden' zelfs naar Parijs geëxporteerd. Zoals de foto duidelijk laat zien was de 'fabricatie' puur handwerk die vooral door vrouwen werd uitgevoerd.
