Possible Copyright Vio[edit]

You wrote me in May about about a possible copyright vio. https://ticket.wikimedia.org/otrs/index.pl?Action=AgentTicketZoom&TicketNumber=2023052710004474 I am not sure how to approach that. It is a long video and in a foreign language. I can say unequivocally that I didn't give permission--if that image appears without proper attribution. I never dual licence images. If people want to reuse the things I upload--they have to follow one of the licences.

Does the WikiCommons send-out anything to the possible offender or is that up to the copyright holder (me)?

Having done >3,500 images on the WikiCommons, I have seen a few clear cut copyright vios of my work-- including one in a textbook (Silverberg's Principles and Practice of Surgical Pathology and Cytopathology 5th Ed.) (cystitis cystica) and one on the cover of the print edition of a large medical journal (Canadian Medical Association Journal - July 12, 2021) (diffuse alveolar damage). In the case of the cystitis cystica, I asked the editor to upload an image of something that isn't in the WikiCommons and I would let it go. The editor did honour that ( https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Prostatic_stromal_tumor_of_uncertain_malignant_potential_-_1_WBAL.jpg ). In the case of the CMAJ, I wrote them a letter. They didn't publish the letter... but they did issue a correction in a subsequent issue. Nephron  T|C 01:30, 3 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Looks like a copyright vio to me - image appears at 20:08 in the video. Nephron  T|C 01:41, 3 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Nephron We don't send anything to the possible offender (and cannot, of course, offer legal advice), that's up to you. It looks like YouTube has a DMCA takedown form at [1], if you want to go that route. Or if you're willing to let past violations go if they start complying now, perhaps emailing the provided email at https://drpatoloji.com/ could get you in touch with them.
In general, if you're interested in going after infringement, you may wish to reach out to Josve05a, who has gone after infringers legally [2] (looks like the case settled) and has written about his philosophy when pursuing infringers at w:en:Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2023-08-15/Opinion (see especially his comments). —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 01:55, 3 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

"PDMark-owner" changed to "PD-author-FlickrPDM"[edit]

Mdaniels5757, you replaced this file's license and marked the file reviewed here: [3]

Why would the license you gave the file need to be replaced with another license? Here: [4]

What is the difference between these two licenses?

Thanks, -- Ooligan (talk) 16:05, 7 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Ooligan CC0 and the Public Domain Mark are different: the CC0 is a legal document used to release a work to the public domain, or get as close to that as possible; the PDM is not a legal document at all (it just says that the person applying it thinks it is in the public domain). When it is applied to someone's own work, we take that as an intent to release the work to the public domain (discussion).
I can't speak to why A1Cafel replaced the PDMark-owner template with the PD-author-FlickrPDM template, which both indicate that the file was marked by the owner with the PDM (the latter is Flickr-specific). Both PDMark-owner and PD-author-FlickrPDM are correct here though (although, as explained above, CC0 is not correct here). —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 19:45, 7 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you for the detailed explanation. Do you why a "Flickr specific," but apparently redundant PDM license was created? -- Ooligan (talk) 03:35, 16 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Ooligan No clue; you'd have to ask Jarekt. —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 19:38, 16 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ok, thanks again, -- Ooligan (talk) 20:09, 16 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

PageLinksCopier[edit]

Hi @Mdaniels5757. I have been working on User:TheAafi/PageLinksCopier, a script that helps easily copy the page/file titles that are non-English in nature. I have tested it in English and Urdu, and would like to have some other languages included as well. Since you are an interface admin, you better know how these things work. I'd appreciate your advices. ─ The Aafī (talk) 13:18, 12 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@TheAafi Sorry for the delay. I have no experience developing a script that uses multiple languages from scratch, but your implementation of internationalization seem to be good. Sorry that I can't be more helpful. (And also, congrats on your adminship!) —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 00:28, 15 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ah, its perfectly okay. Thank you. With this, this would now work on Special pages as well. It still lacks support to help copy such links on mobile but it works in most cases. Perhaps I'd some tweaks later when I get a better comprehension. I have based it on tweaks from the creator, and Yethrosh, a 'crat on Urdu Wikipedia, who has forked another version of it specifically for mobile where it works on all pages. I just have to collect stuff, combine, tweak, and then enjoy. ;) ─ The Aafī (talk) 20:33, 18 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

PD-1023 updating[edit]

Hi there! I wasn't sure exactly who to ask, but seeing as you are an Admin I was hoping to get some help.

I know that many files were uploaded with the template PD-1923, and they haven't been updated since the original upload. Since we are a few years removed now from 1923 works being public domain I was interested in updating the licenses to PD-US-expired. I'm aware that it makes no functional difference in the files, but I wanted to go ahead and update since it seems to be good for future users who come across those files. I was wondering if you knew of a tool to use that could help identify how many and which files had these licenses applied.

I've looked at the Tools page on Commons, and I know that MediaWiki does feature some things, but I am unsure where to look further.

I'm really interested in growing my skills of utilizing Commons tools and resources, so I would really appreciate if you could help send me in the right direction. SDudley (talk) 04:45, 19 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@SDudley Although there is no policy on Commons against cosmetic bot edits that I'm aware of, your proposed edits fall within w:en:WP:COSMETICBOT, and as such you may have a hard time getting consensus for making these changes. Per [5], PD-1923 has 341,184 transclusions, and you can view the pages that transclude it at [6] (although there is no need, the following command will find all usages for you). If approved, you could use pywikibot and the following command: python3 pwb.py template "PD-1923" "PD-US-expired". I hope this helps. —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 21:29, 20 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
This is hugely helpful! I was primarily looking for the tools needed to even tell how many pages were utilizing that template. But if there is a way to do a more massive change then I can look into that. Thank you again, I really appreciate this. SDudley (talk) 22:08, 20 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Upload Photos[edit]

Hello! I noticed that you pointed out some of my photos as possible copyright infringement. Why is that? All the photos belong to Georgios Tsianos and he personally gave them to me to use on the page I created for him. What do I need to do to upload my photos properly without problems? What steps should I follow? Vassilis Tsiotras (talk) 08:41, 19 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Vassilis Tsiotras Please have the photographer send permission to COM:VRT. —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 21:30, 20 January 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I notice that you have deleted this file a couple of times. It has been reuploaded again, but I can't see if it's identical to the deleted ones or not. Can you have a look? Thanks. Marbletan (talk) 14:11, 8 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hi Mdaniels, the bot seems to be stuck. It has stopped working since 6 days ago. 0x0a (talk) 17:53, 20 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@0x0a Fixed. Thanks for letting me know. —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 19:53, 21 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Mdaniels5757 Hi, will this bot work again? Tehonk (talk) 22:22, 29 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Tehonk Fixed again. —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 17:04, 1 March 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Can you look why?[edit]

I changed my interface language to Urdu today and it appears that there comes an additional link to COM:دیوان عام above COM:Village Pump. Village pump is called دیوان عام in Urdu and there should exist only one link. The page at COM:دیوان عام is nonetheless spam which I nominated for deletion. Do you know why it appears double? ─ Aafī (talk) 06:39, 25 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@TheAafi Odd, was it fixed by your edit to MediaWiki:Village pump/ur? —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 00:36, 2 March 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I noticed Community Portal was mistranslated at translatewiki and I fixed the translation and translated it into چوپال. However, I couldn't locate a string for Village Pump there and attempted a translation here. There's an issue currently: The Urdu version for Community Portal - چوپال - leads one to COM:دیوان عام (which it shoudn't. It should go to the Urdu version of Commons:چوپال, and until then the base version at Commons:Community portal) and the Urdu version for Village Pump - دیوان عام - leads one to COM:Village Pump, which seems fine as village pump here isn't currently available in Urdu. The fix to Community portal should come from translatewiki I suppose, given that MediaWiki:Portal-url/ur was deleted long ago and has a string that comes from elsewhere. A quick fix would be to override and create the page at MediaWiki:Portal-url/ur. ─ Aafī (talk) 05:13, 2 March 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Importer for Yug[edit]

Hello Mdaniels, I just got confirmation that Lingualibre v3 is on track. Still 6 months away, but we need help to push forward. Could you guide us Importer for Yug and create that phabricator ticket ?

« Lingualibre is not in the list of supported wikis to import from, that will need to be changed (I can file the phab task if you need once we agree that this should be done). »

Yug (talk) 10:05, 27 February 2024 (UTC)Reply[reply]

File:BSHS Products.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
